On 24 May, European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani inaugurated the European Minerals Day 4th edition, paying a visit to the Omya underground mining operations in Vipiteno, Italy.

The European Minerals Day took place at quarry sites and plants all over Europe on 24-26 May 2013, under the auspices of the European Commission. Around 113 mineral raw materials producers opened their doors and organised more than 170 events for school children and neighbouring communities. The activities varied, ranging from guided visits to active and restored quarries and plant sites, to workshops for children, school projects, sport events, jeep safaris, presentations, etc. The EMD 2013 was celebrated in 24 countries.
