Resource Efficiency Indicators

In the Resource Efficiency Roadmap, the Commission foresees the development of indicators to quantify and monitor progress towards sustainable development through life cycle thinking, including Resource Efficiency Indicators to show how the overall environmental impact of resource use is related to the overall economic growth. By 2013, and with the collaboration of all relevant stakeholders, these indicators – which will assess and measure the improvement in resource efficiency – should be agreed. For the moment, two sets of provisional indicators have been proposed:

  1. Lead indicator – “Resource Productivity” – measured by the ratio of GDP to Domestic Material Consumption, in order to measure the economic performance while reducing pressure on natural resources
  2. Complementary indicators on key natural resources (e.g. water, land, materials and
carbon) that will take account of the EU’s global consumption of these resources.
